Irving V. “Top” Augur passed away on February 3rd at the age of 87 in Palm Desert, CA. Top was a visionary in the art & craft industry. He was the leader and guiding spirit of Southern California’s Leisure Crafts which began its life under the company name MacPherson’s Stationers. He founded VanAken Clay, makers of Jaz Tempera and VanAken Modeling Clays. Top retired when Leisure Crafts was sold to ArtCraft in 1994. He was a world traveler and bon vivant. Top is survived by his children Roger, Maggie, Robert and Carol. A memorial service celebrating Top’s life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 18th at Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church in…

In Memory of John Ward As many of you know, the art supply industry lost one of its friends and members this year, in the passing of John Michael Ward, owner of National Art Supply in New Orleans LA. John, only 45 years old, was killed in a tragic accident on February 14, 2010, shortly after attending one of the many traditional New Orleans events that he loved, the Marti Gras Endymion parade. With profound sadness we report the death of Peter Lenz, the 13-year old grandson of Andy and Cynthia Lenz owners of Lenz Art in Santa Cruz, CA. Peter was a motorcycle racing phenom. He was killed doing the thing he loved best, racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a practice lap prior to the start of the U.S. Grand Prix Riders Union race. It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Rosenbaum. As many of you know, Lanny had been fighting a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer for the past two years. He died yesterday—October 26, 2009. Lanny joined the Blick family in 1997 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. During his 12 years with the company, he was instrumental in identifying and developing a variety of catalog, internet, and private label growth opportunities. Newell Rubbermaid, parent company of Sanford Business-to-Business, announced it would close its Sanford operations in Janesville, WI early next year, laying off 153 workers. Sanford is the last remnant of the former Parker Pen company, a company that in many ways defined Janesville. On August 20th Candy Meininger, sister and former business partner of Henry, died in her sleep at home. She had valiantly battled colon cancer for the past two years. She will be missed by many in our industry who knew and respected her.
